Celebrate ASPCA's Adopt A Shelter Dog By Adopting A New Friend

The Duarte Azusa Animal Hospital is celebrating ASPCA’s Adopt a Shelter Dog event by educating the community about the importance of pet adoption and how it benefits the animal and its human companion. The ASPCA estimates that over 3.3 million animals end up in animal shelters each year. Although most shelters have adopted a no-kill policy, and they do everything in their power to save the lives of the animals in their care, far too many animals lose their lives each year because their time had simply run out. Besides the fact that adopting a dog from a shelter will save a life, there are other benefits associated with it as well.

How Pet Adoption Could Help You

There has been an abundance of studies done regarding the benefits of pet adoption. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) people who own a pet tend to see an improvement in their overall health. One of the reasons for this is because people who own dogs tend to be more social and their exercise and activity levels increase. Some of the health benefits associated with owning a dog include but are not limited to lower blood pressure levels, lower triglyceride levels, lower cholesterol levels, and improved hemoglobin A1C numbers.
