5 Myths About Spay & Neuter (and the Facts!)
Our Duarte & Azusa Veterinarian performs spay and neuter surgeries on dogs and cats. As we talk with pet owners, we find some of them are hesitant to have the surgery performed due to common misconceptions.
Female Cats and Dogs Should Have One Litter before Being Spayed by our Duarte & Azusa Veterinarian
Cats and dogs can be spayed by our Duarte & Azusa Veterinarian as early as two months old. There is no health benefit for a female pet to have a litter prior to being spayed. In fact, research now indicates that female pets that are spayed before their first litter have fewer health problems.
My Companion Will Gain Weight Once Sterilized
A combination of lack of exercise and eating too much causes pets to weight gain. If you have concerns about your pet's weight, our veterinarian can weigh your pet and recommend age-appropriate activities and food to help your pet maintain or lose weight.
It is too Expensive to Spay or Neuter Pets
Having your pet sterilized is not as expensive as raising a litter. Our veterinarian would be happy to tell you the cost of sterilizing your pet so that you can plan for the surgery.
My Pets Behavior or Personality Will Change for the Worse
Pet behaviors often change for the better. Once your pet is spayed or neutered, your companion will be less likely to roam or get into fights with other animals. Male dogs are also less likely to mark their territory too.
My Pet is a Purebred and Should Be Bred before Being Spayed
Many purebred pets end up in shelters just like their mixed-breed counterparts. Allowing your pet mate and have a purebred litter only increases shelter overpopulation, even if you find the puppies or kittens new homes, because those pet owners will no longer consider adopting a pet.
