Whether you have a dog or cat who needs orthopedic surgery or surgery to remove a foreign body, it is crucial to be prepared. Knowing how to get your pet ready for surgery involving anesthesia helps ensure that the procedure goes smoothly.

When you bring your dog or cat to our clinic, you can expect to receive high-quality care before, during and after surgery from our Duarte veterinarian. When we use anesthesia, we closely monitor your pet’s vital signs and respond immediately to any changes that occur. If your pet will be undergoing a procedure that requires the use of anesthesia, keep in mind that fasting is necessary. Do not feed your pet for a specified period of time before surgery. If your pet is very young or has a condition such as diabetes, we might allow one small meal prior to surgery.

Please let us know if your pet takes any medication. Depending on which type of medication your pet takes, you might have to skip it before surgery. If this is the case, you can bring your pet’s medication with you and leave it with us. We will make sure your pet receives medication as soon as it is safe to do so. 

Be prepared to drop your pet off earlier than the scheduled procedure. This allows us to run tests before surgery, insert an IV catheter and perform other important pre-surgical tasks. We will also ask you to fill out paperwork and provide us with a number to reach you.
