Guide to Pet Vaccines

Guide to Pet Vaccines

If your pet dog has recently had puppies or your cat has given birth to kittens, you want to make sure that you give these small creatures the appropriate medical care so they can grow up healthy and happy. One of the most important things you need to arrange is a trip to the vet for vaccinations.

Whether you are celebrating the birth of new pets or are bringing home a new pet cat or dog from a shelter or other location in Duarte or Azusa, it’s prudent to make a list of vaccinations and schedule them with your animal doctor.

Taking care of a new pet cat or dog is an exciting time for your family, and the staff at Duarte & Azusa Veterinarian urges you to protect your animals by scheduling vaccinations and getting them done on time.

Rabies Shots for Both Dogs and Cats

In California, the state requires all dogs and cats to be vaccinated for rabies, according to the L.A. Department of Animal Care and Control, which maintains a schedule of recommended vaccinations.

Dogs and cats should repeat their rabies vaccination one year after the first vaccination. After that, you must administer another rabies vaccination once every three years.

Dogs

Canines aged four months or less need to get three vaccinations spaced three weeks apart, according to the Department of Animal Care and Control. Begin these vaccinations when the puppy turns eight weeks old:

1. DHLPP, Bordetella

2. DHLPP, Bordetella

3. DHLPP, Bordetella, Rabies

All dogs older than four months should get two sets of vaccines, spaced three weeks apart:

1. DHLPP, Bordetella, Rabies

2. DHLPP, Bordetella

You should repeat these DHLPP and Bordetella vaccinations once every year, noted Animal Care and Control. In cases where you regularly board your dog or otherwise expose your dog to other dogs, you are advised to repeat the Bordetella vaccination twice every year.

Cats

Felines aged 4 months or less need to get three vaccinations, spaced three weeks apart:

1. FVRCP

2. FVRCP

3. FVRCP, Rabies

All cats older than 4 months must get two vaccinations, spaced at three week intervals:

1. FVRCP, Rabies
