How To Tell If Your Kitten is Sick

How To Tell If Your Kitten is SickDuarte Azusa Animal Hospital Shares the signs of a sick kitten or cat

Kittens and other young animals are at an increased risk for getting sick because their immune systems are not fully mature. Remaining proactive towards your kitten's health is essential to preventing your new best friend from suffering feline-specific diseases and disorders. To help you raise your kitten into a healthy, happy cat, Duarte & Azusa veterinarian clinic provides a variety of medical services for kittens including vaccinations and regular check-ups to ensure they are developing normally.

In between visits to our animal hospital, you can keep your kitten healthy by giving her lots of love, attention and playtime. However, if you notice your kitten presenting any of these symptoms or behaviors, please bring your kitten in right away:

  • Loss of hair and frequent scratching (may be signs of flea infestation or other parasitical infection)
  • Diarrhea (common symptom of worms)
  • Drainage coming from the eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Sneezing and coughing (if the animal is not vaccinated, it could be a sign of distemper or parvo)
  • Lack of appetite
  • Apathetic, listless behavior (kittens are naturally energetic and playful)

Since kittens cannot tell us when they do not feel well, you should always remain vigilant for signs of illness no matter how insignificant they may seem. By making sure your kitten receives her vaccinations and regular check-ups, you are helping foster years of enjoyment with your feline companion.

Newborn kittens receive protection from diseases by drinking their mother's milk, as long as the mother has been properly vaccinated. However, when young animals reach the age of weaning, they need to get their own vaccinations as soon as possible.

When Should Kittens Start Getting Vaccinations?

Duarte & Azusa veterinarian services recommend kittens receive feline vaccinations between nine and 12 weeks of age. All young cats should also have a booster vaccination one year after receiving their initial vaccination. Booster shots strengthen the immune response of the initial vaccination and ensure your cat is adequately protected against infectious bacterial or viral diseases.
